The leads I received were all but good. And the traffic I paid for left without earning me a penny in return.

- Lead capture pages provide duplicate, low value and not much relevant information: You know that search engines place web pages with the exact opposite characteristics - high value, relevant and no duplicated content - at the top of the search results. That's free targeted traffic! It's beyond me to understand what valuable or relevant information mlm capture pages aim to provide.
- Lead capture pages lack the ability to create trust: The bad smell of "Get Rich Quick" pollutes the air. That leaves visitors in doubts and feeling uneasy about this 'great opportunity'. Finally they fear they could loose something and hit the "Back" button.
- They miserably fail to qualify leads by forcing interested visitors into one and the same profile: A considerable amount of visitors just doesn't feel right about the page and how it speaks to them. If there were a system that could do the job of qualifying prospects and leads, you'd be saving yourself a lot of time sifting and selecting the few good leads out of the many lower quality leads.

- They even fail to monetize the arriving traffic in other ways: As was said earlier, once the traffic you paid for is gone, it's gone. It's wasted money and there's no way to get it back.

- A business needs to generate sales revenues and the majority should come from ordinary retail customers and not from that self-consumption-downline. Yet, almost all lead capture pages are geared towards getting people to join a 'self-consumption' opportunity.
I am having two worries here:- The quality of the downline is questionable. People ask me why I turn down people when they ask me to join me. "Solely to build a good quality downline" is my answer.
- A lead capture page leaves you with the sorting and qualifying process and too many desperate network marketers just recruit to get the joining commission. The downline itself only produces low residual revenues.
And that's simply not how it works. The life of such a downline is short and burns far to many people. No wonder the bad Internet MLM stigma manifests itself each day. - The fact that most downline members do not actively sell the products to retail customers is worrying me. Such a self-consumption-downline defeats the purpose and lowers the moneys available to all active performers. Many people don't get to see what they expected and just leave.
The more money you and your downline can genuinely make with retail customers, the more money can be distributed in your downline.
- The once assumed 'safety in numbers' does not exist. It will build you a low quality downline, insecure revenue and consume a lot of your time. A highly ineffective approach. Selfishness and wanting instant gratification caused big enough a damage to the image of network marketing.
Scams and blurry lines towards illegal pyramid schemes testify the - still ongoing - misuse of the Internet to make a quick fortune. Visitors to such capture pages are becoming more cautious and -> hit the "Back" button or close the browser window all together.

Sure is, you'll need a low cost source of targeted and qualified traffic to build your own successful online mlm business.
